Krenek’s sly and restless 𝘒𝘭𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘚𝘺𝘮𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘦, a forgotten work born of the turbulent 1920s, is followed by the intimate, meditative Adagio from Mahler’s final, unfinished utterance. In conversation, Welser-Möst muses on the disorienting days of hyperinflation in the Weimar Republic and its effects on artists like the curious, polyglot Ernst Krenek. While the poignant beauty of Mahler’s incomplete work provides a stark contrast to Krenek and his world, the two composers were inextricably linked — through Mahler’s daughter Anna, whom Krenek married, and through Alma Mahler’s unfulfilled request that Krenek finish the Tenth Symphony in Mahler’s stead.
