๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ฅ Adagio from Symphony No. 10
Franz Welser-Mรถst traverses worlds of wit and longing in this evocative program. Krenekโs sly and restless ๐๐ญ๐ฆ๐ช๐ฏ๐ฆ ๐๐บ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ช๐ฆ, a forgotten work born of the turbulent 1920s, is followed by the intimate, meditative Adagio from Mahlerโs final, unfinished utterance. In conversation, Welser-Mรถst muses on the disorienting days of hyperinflation in the Weimar Republic and its effects on artists like the curious, polyglot Ernst Krenek. While the poignant beauty of Mahlerโs incomplete work provides a stark contrast to Krenek and his world, the two composers were inextricably linked โ through Mahlerโs daughter Anna, whom Krenek married, and through Alma Mahlerโs unfulfilled request that Krenek finish the Tenth Symphony in Mahlerโs stead.
